North West Frontier of Pakistan/Afghanistan Border North West Frontier

After four years of preparation, the first Primary Trauma Care course for doctors from the Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA) in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan (NWFP) will take place in Peshawar on 3rd and 4th December 2007. The delegates will be brought in from the tribal areas and a full PTC training will be given thus emulating the work that began in Peshawar in 2003 and has since spread around the rest of Pakistan.

As in other parts of the world those who are trained in Primary Trauma Care will themselves become trainers and it is hoped that this discipline for trauma management will spread throughout the whole of the Pakistan/ Afghanistan border areas.

IDEALS has been at the forefront of this work from the start and will completely fund the initial stages of this new project. The instructors will include IDEALS trustees Sir Terence English and John Beavis as well as the energetic and active PTC faculty from Peshawar. The first course in Pakistan was held in Ghandara University, Peshawar, in March 2003 and they have graciously offered the hospitality of the University for this seminal event.

IDEALS will hopefully extend its activities in FATA in other medical fields such as mother and baby care and we will also respond to requests to re-equip hospitals that are often poorly resourced.
