Éamon McCoy MD, FFARCSI

After graduating from University College Cork in 1986, Éamon McCoy completed his medical pre-registration year in Cork Regional Hospital. He then moved to the Northern Ireland Anaesthetic Training Scheme and was awarded his fellowship in anaesthesia in 1990.

After a year in The Royal Adelaide Hospital, South Australia, which included working in air retrieval and research in critical incident monitoring, he was appointed consultant anaesthetist in The Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, in 1996. His research interests include polytrauma, difficult airway management and the pharmacology of anaesthetic drugs. This has resulted in more than 50 scientific publication and an MD by Thesis by The Queen’s University of Belfast in 1995. Clinical interests include difficult airway and major trauma management, resuscitation and the transport of the critically ill patient.

In 1992, he invented The McCoy laryngoscope which has sold over 12,000 units in more than 60 countries worldwide. He has been awarded multiple postgraduate prizes including The Cutler's Surgical Prize by The Royal College of Surgeons of England and was named the United Kingdom Doctor of the Year in 1995
